THE FELLOWSHIP OF DISCIPLINE
Classical yoga essentially is a neutral spiritual practice accessible to people of all faith; the purpose of this section is to see how this can be translated for students of a Christian background
As Richard Foster reminds in his Celebration of Discipline, one ought to cultivate the soil of his/her being in order to allow space for Grace to expand; Grace is there, within everyone as a potential and is a free gift. However as one doesn't become slim by seating watching tv, one does not become righteous simply by wishing it; the mind needs to be tamed and like the rest of the person can be trained to become a pure and useful tool, a tool to help making right and wise choices and most of all, a tool which does not stop the Spirit within from shining through. Living the Christian way involves being righteous, compassionate, loving and caring, for your neighbours as well as caring for yourself. Meditation is a renowned and ancestral practice which has been proven to help develop these qualities: the desert fathers of the early church used to practice meditation and sacred word repetition and regarded these practices with great esteem and so did other famous Christians from history such as John of the Cross and Thomas Merton. As for yoga in its classical meaning (Yoga Sutra) it is understood as a meditation practice: a tool to allow the Spirit within to shine forth (Y.S 1-3). Practiced in a Christian environment yoga postures and meditation can be transcended and oriented to become a tool to serve God's purposes
A famous Christian and yoga teacher once compared the human being to a radio: hearing and living the Word of God is like searching for a small station and requires a lot of fine tuning: physical, emotional and spiritual tuning; this is exactly the project of the Fellowship of Discipline: tuning our whole being, all dimensions of it, in order to create space for Grace to expand, and clear the useless "statics" hindering the growth of righteousness. The classes are a safe and friendly environment to promote spiritual growth and a live experience of Christian faith. They are composed of prayers, meditation, yoga postures, contemplation and scripture reading, a full package for a full embrace of the Word. Come and join us in this heart growing project!
Classes to start soon, watch this space for dates
